Tower of Porta Terra

Tower of Porta Terra

Renamed “Porta a Terra” in the Savoy era, it was originally Porta Reial, the main entrance of the city, overlaid by the Aragon’s crown-shaped coat of arms, which has been preserved in its interior. The door, which was closed to dusk, allowed the entry and exit of the city from the ground to the end of the nineteenth century, when the city was demilitarized. The tower has a typically sixteenth century type, with a well-framed sandstone gateway and a perimeter structure obtained with sack technique. The structure nowadays includes a set of services designed to present and enhance the city’s cultural heritage such as tourist information, guided tours and didactic tours in the historic center and in the territory.
